What it means
Half-ironic praise for a lone-wolf type who does his own thing, supposedly above the alpha and beta pecking order entirely. Mostly used as a joke now, slapped on anyone acting moodily independent or staring off into the middle distance like the main character.

Where it comes from
It comes from sigma male, a bit of internet pseudo-psychology that tried to rank men outside the usual alpha and beta setup. The whole thing got memeified fast, so sigma stopped sounding serious and turned into a jokey label for anyone giving off lone wolf, too-cool-to-engage energy.
