"Jawn can mean almost anything, but most commonly refers to an object or thing. For example, hey, did you see the basketball game? That was a crazy ending. Yes, I watched that jawn last night. I can't believe the Knicks lost in overtime."

What it means

A do-it-all placeholder noun for basically anything: a thing, a person, a place, an idea, even a whole situation. If you can point at it or think it, it can be a jawn. It’s famously Philly slang, rooted in local Black English, and it’s popped up in NYC speech too, especially among people with Philly ties. Context does all the heavy lifting.

Usage examples

"Yo, where that jawn at? Grab the blue one by the bodega door, not the busted jawn on the stoop, aight."
"Pass me that jawn on the counter, no, the other jawn, the one we used to fix the bike last weekend."
"This jawn right here is my favorite sandwich spot, don't let the busted sign fool you."
"I forgot the jawn you sent me, the PDF, not the picture, so shoot it over again."
"That jawn you posted last night had everybody crying, send me the link again."

Where it comes from

Jawn comes from joint, which had already been doing all-purpose noun duty in Black English for a long time. In Philadelphia, the pronunciation shifted and settled into jawn, then the city made it its own. It grew into a signature Philly word that can point to nearly anything, with context doing the real work.
