What it means

You say I'm dead when something's so funny it absolutely takes you out. It's not literal at all, it's pure drama for laughs. People drop it in texts, comments, group chats, or right in the middle of cracking up. You'll also see dead, I'm deceased, or literally I'm dead doing the same job.

Usage examples

"Did you see that clip of the toddler trying to whisper but yelling instead? I'm dead, I've rewatched it ten times."
"Brian sent the meeting recording with his mic still on, singing in the shower. The whole group chat went I'm dead within seconds."
"Nah, the way she said sorry to the chair after bumping into it, I'm dead."
"He posted a serious gym selfie and his mum commented handsome prince with three flame emojis. I'm dead."
"You put your phone on speaker in class and it started reading out your low battery warning in that dramatic robot voice. I'm dead."

Where it comes from

This comes from African American Vernacular English, where dead had already been used for emphasis before internet slang grabbed the wheel. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Twitter, Tumblr, and meme-heavy online chat helped I'm dead blow up as a go-to reaction for something painfully funny.
