The radiator in my hallway makes a noise like a tiny ghost trying to start a motorbike, and honestly I’d miss it if it stopped. I’ve got a coat pocket full of receipts, a smooth grey pebble from Brighton, and a loyalty card for a cobbler I’ve never actually visited. On the bus I quietly invent life stories for people based entirely on their shopping bags. I talk to my sandwiches while I cut them. I think I have a real gift for that. My favourite time of day is when the streetlights flicker on, but before anyone closes their curtains. I can name four species of garden bird but only if they’re standing still and looking at me first.
