The secret life of Brownies (what nobody sees)

There sits your Magikito. All still on the shelf, wearing that cheeky little smile that never changes. You glance over, it keeps you company while you work or read, and you think, “Aw, look at you, all sweet and quiet.”

Hang on... What if we told you that the second you turn your back, everything changes?

Welcome to their secret life

Magikitos have one sacred rule: they only move when nobody's looking. If you haven't adopted one yet, maybe it's time. It's part of their magic, part of that one-of-a-kind charm. And trust me, they make every second count.

Sock stealing, a national sport

That sock that vanished from the washing machine without a trace? Or the one you'd swear you put in the drawer and now it's gone? Yep, that was them.

Socks are their dearest treasure. They collect them, use them as towels after their nightly adventures and, according to a few very unverified reports, as hammocks for a cheeky nap.

A real statement from Carmen: “I've got three Magikitos in my workshop. I haven't found a matching pair of socks in months. Coincidence? I don't think so.”

Night-time meetups

Once you go to sleep, the Magikitos from the whole neighbourhood, and sometimes half the town, get together. We don't know exactly where, but our guess is a corner of the living room, near the plants or in the kitchen.

What do they do at these meetings?

  • Sock swaps: They trade them like football stickers. “I'll swap you two striped ones for a Superman one.”
  • Mischief planning: They decide which object will vanish for no obvious reason the next day, keys, remotes, pens...
  • Top-tier gossip: They tell each other about the day's adventures, who managed to make their human laugh and who pulled off the prank of the month.
  • Story time: The older Magikitos tell the younger ones tales from the Taramundi forest.

Their favourite places to explore

When you're out of the house, or fast asleep, the Magikitos head off on little adventures. These are their favourite spots:

1. The kitchen

They love nosing around the pantry. They don't eat, they don't need to, but they love smelling the spices and seeing what's new. If you find a jar sitting somewhere else, now you know why.

2. The plants

Magikitos are big nature fans, so if you've got plants at home, get ready. They like sitting among the leaves, chatting to them, yes, chatting to them, and making sure they're doing well.

Fun little clue: If your plants look especially green and happy, you might have a Magikito giving you a hand without you even knowing.

3. Your desk

If you work from home, your Magikito has definitely had a nose through your papers. It isn't just because they're nosy. All right, maybe a little. They just like knowing what you're up to.

4. The bookshelf

Some Magikitos are proper bookworms. They'll spend hours reading spines, pulling books out, never putting them back in the same place, by the way, and leaving mysterious little marks.

The signs your Magikito has been off on an adventure

How can you tell your Magikito has been up to something while you weren't looking? Here are the signs:

  • Objects you know you left in one place turning up somewhere else
  • Missing socks, the clearest sign of all
  • That feeling that “something's been moved” even though you can't tell what
  • Your Magikito looks just a tiny bit more mischievous than usual
  • You find little crumbs near where they sit. They don't eat, but they do love playing with them

Magikitos and pets

If you've got a cat or a dog, you've probably noticed them staring at your Magikito now and then. No, they're not losing it. It's just that they really can see them move.

Animals have a sixth sense for magic. Your cat knows full well that little Brownie moves when you're not looking. That's why they sometimes stare with that mix of fascination and, “I've got my eye on you, you little rascal.”

Tip: If your cat starts meowing at your Magikito at 3 a.m., they're probably having one of those really good conversations. Don't interrupt. Just enjoy the show.

The most famous bits of mischief

Over time, we've collected stories from people who've adopted Magikitos. These are some of the most legendary ones:

The case of the missing remote control (Madrid, 2023)

One adopter found her TV remote inside the shoe rack. She swore she hadn't put it there. Her Magikito, though, looked especially proud that morning.

The sock invasion (Barcelona, 2024)

One adopter discovered a “secret cave” of odd socks behind the bookshelf. Coincidence that his Magikito was sitting right on that shelf? I don't think so.

The mystery of the keys (Valencia, 2023)

A set of keys turned up inside a plant pot after going missing for three days. The Magikito in that house seemed to be whistling innocently, or so their human swears.

How do you live with a mischievous Magikito?

Here are a few survival tips:

  1. Accept that you're going to lose socks. It's part of the deal. Buy extras.
  2. Give your keys a proper spot. Even then, they'll disappear sometimes. Take a deep breath.
  3. Don't get cross. Mischief is their way of saying, “I'm here, don't forget me.”
  4. Enjoy the mystery. Life is more fun with a little unexplained magic.
  5. Talk to them. Even if it seems like they're not listening, they are. And they love it.

The secret pact

Magikitos make a pact with you from the moment they arrive at your home:

“I'll keep you company, steal the odd sock now and then, move things around to keep you on your toes and remind you every day that magic exists. You, in return, look after me kindly and let me bring a little mischievous joy into your life.”

And remember...

Next time you can't find something, before you blame your memory or the washing machine, look at your Magikito. That cheeky little smile will tell you everything.

Magikitos exploring the world
See? This is the sort of thing they get up to when you leave the house.

Because life is so much more fun when you've got a little partner in mischief making the everyday feel magical.
