What it means

Mental means crazy, wild, or way too intense to feel normal. You use it for fights, near misses, packed scenes, mad nights out, anything that went fully off the rails. It often carries that mix of shock and respect. That was mental is basically saying the whole thing was off the scale. Best not to use it loosely around actual mental health stuff.

Usage examples

"That coaster launched us backwards in the dark and my stomach tried to leave my body. Proper mental, mate. Fancy a chippy after?"
"The queue for the new bakery was mental, round the corner and halfway down the next street."
"He drove all night to surprise her, which is a bit mental but undeniably romantic."
"Did you see that tackle? Absolute mental, thought his legs were gonna file a complaint."
"We ended up at some random warehouse party at 4am and the whole thing was just mental in the best way."
