A short break at work to have a smoke, a cuppa, or just stare into the middle distance and remember you’re human. It comes from smoke with the classic Aussie -o ending, like arvo. These days it’s not strictly about cigarettes, it’s the unofficial reset button on worksites, in factories, or anywhere the day’s dragging.

Where it comes from
From smoke plus the classic Australian -o ending, the same kind of shortening you get in arvo and servo. It started as a cigarette break, especially in manual work settings, then widened out to mean any short work break for a tea, a snack, or just ten minutes off the grind.
