Street voices
"Who died and made you boss? Something said in reply to someone trying to order you around or tell you what to do despite having no established authority over you. All right, let's get this group project going. I'm going to do some research on wind energy, and you try to do the same for hydraulic energy, and also try to get a slide going, okay? Whoa, who died and made you boss?"
What it means
A cheeky comeback for when someone suddenly starts barking orders and acting like they run the place when nobody handed them the crown. You throw it out to puncture that bossy little power trip and remind them to calm down, they're not the one in charge here.
Usage examples
"Bro, you picked the playlist once and now you are assigning jobs at the barbecue? Who died and made you boss, chill out a sec."
"She started handing out chores the second she arrived, and her brother just raised an eyebrow and asked who died and made you boss."
"You got put in charge of bringing napkins and now you're directing traffic? Who died and made you boss?"
"Mate, it's a movie night, not a military operation. Who died and made you boss?"
"You got asked to book the table and now you're seating everybody by rank? Who died and made you boss?"
Got something to say?
Edit, fix or tell us something. We review it and, if it is true, you will see it applied with your name on it.
Where it comes from
A snappy jab built on the idea that authority usually passes on when someone dies. Thrown at a sudden bossy streak, it asks where on earth that crown came from.
