"brain rot refers to basically really dumb content like on social media that makes absolutely no sense by the way but it just, it can be catchy, it just takes over your brain, aka brain rot, rotting your brain. An example would be, oh my god, tung tung tung sahur, tralalero tralala is probably the worst form of brain rot I have ever seen"
What it means
Brainrot is that fried, meme-soaked state where your brain starts running on repost fumes and broken internet catchphrases. It can mean the content itself is aggressively dumb, addictive, and impossible to look away from, or the effect it has on you after too much scrolling. People use it half as an insult, half as a goofy badge of honour.
Usage examples

"Three hours of short videos and now I've got total brainrot."
"That game is pure brainrot, I can't stop playing it."
"I've watched so many edits tonight I've got full-on brainrot and now every sentence in my head sounds sped up."
"This group chat is pure brainrot, five minutes in and we're communicating in memes and noise."

Where it comes from
Brain rot has been around in English for a long time as a metaphor for mental decay. Online culture revived it hard in the 2020s, especially for the mushy, overcooked feeling that comes from bingeing low-value content, memes, and hyper-repetitive short videos. Oxford named brain rot its 2024 Word of the Year.
