"Lore is basically your backstory. The more unhinged or the more traumatic it is, the more lore it is or, you know, like, the more shocking. Let's say, I don't know, you got chased by an alligator or you almost got stabbed or you did get stabbed or you got hit by a car. That's all lore and it doesn't have to be, you know, just about you personally. It could be about a company. A company can have crazy lore. An example would be, oh my God, did you hear there's underground tunnels under Magic Kingdom in Disney World? There is so much lore behind Disney."

What it means

Lore is the backstory soup behind a person, meme, fandom, brand, whatever. It’s all the old drama, weird incidents, running jokes, side quests, and origin bits that make the present chaos make sense. If you know someone’s lore, you’re already deep in the cinematic universe.

Usage examples

"Wait, you do not know his lore? Pull up a chair."
"Every group chat has way too much lore to explain to a newcomer."
"Girl, I need the full lore on why everyone hates that one ex."
"Don't invite me into a fandom unless you're ready to explain ten years of lore."

Where it comes from

This use comes from lore in the older sense of traditional knowledge, stories, and legend. Online, people stretched it into fandom talk, then everyday slang, so now lore means the collected backstory or drama trail behind a person, group, meme, or brand.
