What it means
A banger is something that absolutely goes off. Most often it's a tune that hits straight away and still slaps on the tenth replay, but people use it for anything seriously good, from a mad takeaway to a top night out. In the UK especially, if it lands hard and nobody's arguing, it's a banger.

Where it comes from
This sense grows out of bang, the idea of something hitting with force. By the late 20th century in British and Irish music chat, banger was being used for a track that lands hard and gets an instant reaction. From there it spread wider into everyday slang for anything properly excellent.
