What it means

To be ghosted is when someone suddenly drops off the map and leaves you on pure silence. No reply, no heads-up, no proper ending, just poof. It started off normal, then their messages flatlined and they acted like they never even knew your name.

Usage examples

"We had three great dates and then he just ghosted me."
"I got ghosted by the company after the second interview."
"She was in my DMs every night, then ghosted me the second I asked to meet up."
"After the trial shift they fully ghosted me, so I took the hint and moved on."

Where it comes from

Ghosted comes from ghost, the word for a spirit that appears and disappears without warning. The dating and messaging sense took off in internet-era English in the 2010s, when people started using it for someone cutting contact completely and leaving only radio silence behind.
