Street voices
"L is the complete opposite of W. It's basically loss or, you know, also can be turned, you know, coined as loser, but it's more of loss. So maybe just throw it around when, you know, someone doesn't do something right or they fail at something, you just say L. Or like something doesn't go their way, just L, like that's it. An example from me would be, sorry, oh my God, guys, I literally woke up 30 minutes late and I just missed my flight. I hate it here. I'm just going to take the L."
What it means
An L is a loss, a fail, an embarrassment, or any moment where things go sideways and you just have to wear it. You can call the situation an L or say someone took an L. It lives everywhere online because one letter does the job faster than a whole sad little speech.
Usage examples
"Missed the flight, dropped my phone in the airport toilet, and paid eighteen bucks for stale chips. Massive L, I am going home spiritually barefoot."
"I studied all night, opened the test, and my mind logged out on sight. Straight L."
"Bro really tried to flex in front of everybody and then tripped over the speaker. Took an L in 4K."
Got something to say?
Edit, fix or tell us something. We review it and, if it is true, you will see it applied with your name on it.
Where it comes from
It comes from the letter L for loss, especially in sports score talk and later in gaming. From there it spread into internet slang as a quick way to label any fail, bad break, or public flop. It stuck hard once people paired it with W as the clean opposite.
