"Fumbling. Meaning to fail at something. Hey dude, I hear you've been seeing this cute girl on the low lately. How's that been going? Uh, I, uh, I fumbled her. I don't know what else to say. I just totally fumbled her."

What it means

Fumbling is when the bag was basically in your hands and you still found a way to drop it. It’s blowing a clear chance through nerves, bad timing, weak chat, or just moving clueless. People use it loads for dating and flirting, but it works for anything where the opening was wide open and you still sold.

Usage examples

"Bro, she was clearly into you and you still brought up your ex for ten minutes. You fumbled that so badly it should be studied."
"She gave him three openings to ask her out and he talked about his car insurance instead, an all-time great fumble."
"You had her number, her attention, and somehow turned the convo into crypto chat. Elite-level fumbling, mate."
"He was one text away from locking in the date, then vanished for six days. Proper fumbling."
"You had the invite, the playlist link, and she said pull up, then you replied the next morning. That's generational fumbling."

Where it comes from

It comes from sports talk, especially American football, where to fumble means losing control of the ball after you had possession. From there it spread into everyday English for messing up a chance you already had in reach. Online dating chat gave it a huge extra boost, so now it’s everywhere.
