What it means
To fumble is to mess up a golden chance through nerves, hesitation, or just awful game. Most often it's about romance: they were into you, the lane was wide open, and you still sold. You had the bag in your hands and somehow let it roll away.
Usage examples
"She was perfect for him and he ghosted her, what a fumble."
"Do not fumble this interview, you have prepared for weeks."
"Bro, she asked for your number and you started talking about crypto. Historic fumble."
"He had the job basically gift-wrapped and still turned up late. Absolute fumble."
Where it comes from
It comes from sports, especially American football, where a fumble is when a player loses control of the ball at the worst possible moment. Online slang stretched that idea into dating and social life, so now if you ruin an easy chance with someone, people say you fumbled.
