What it means
A dag is a lovable dork, someone a bit uncool or odd but funny as and good value. It can be teasing or genuinely affectionate, like calling your mate a goose. The word comes from rural slang for the clumps of dried poo stuck in a sheep’s wool, so yeah, it started gross and ended charming.
Usage examples
"Josh rocked up in jandals and a suit jacket, did a terrible karaoke set, and we were cackling. Absolute dag, sweet as."
"He's such a dag, turned up to the barbie in a Hawaiian shirt and socks with sandals and owned it all arvo."
"Don't be a dag, just get up and have a dance, no one out here is judging you, we're all half cut anyway."
Where it comes from
It really does come from the dags, those crusty clumps of dried muck that dangle off a sheep's backside. Farmers used it for a scruffy sort, and somewhere along the way it softened right down into the warm word Aussies and Kiwis now use for a daggy, lovable goofball.
