What it means
Bogan is classic Aussie slang for someone who comes off rough, loud, uncultured, and proudly not fancy. It brings up stuff like mullets, utes, servo sunnies, cheap tinnies, footy chat, thongs, and a full no-frills attitude. It can be a dig, but loads of people use it with a laugh or even own it as part of who they are.

Where it comes from
The exact origin is murky, but bogan is solidly Australian and has been in print since the 1980s. Early written sightings turn up in Australian magazines and newspapers, and by then the word already meant an uncool, rough, lowbrow sort of person. No single proven source has been nailed down.
