What it means
A balls up is a proper British mess, the kind where something's been badly handled and now everyone's stood in the wreckage pretending it's fine. You can call the mistake itself a balls-up, or say someone ballsed it up when they got it badly wrong. Mildly rude, very common, and usually said with a grim little laugh once the damage is already done.

Where it comes from
It’s established British slang from the 20th century, built on balls as part of the UK’s big family of blunt, earthy swear-based expressions. By the 1960s, balls-up was already in use for a serious muddle or blunder. It sits in the same rough-and-ready lane as cock-up and bollocks.
