What it means
A salt of the earth person is proper good people: honest, unshowy, dependable, and kind without making a big song and dance about it. It’s for the sort who just crack on, help others, and keep life ticking over with zero fuss and no posh nonsense.

Where it comes from
The phrase comes from the Bible, in Matthew 5:13, where Jesus tells his followers they’re the salt of the earth. Back then salt mattered loads because it preserved food and gave it value. In everyday English, that turned into a warm way to praise plain, decent, reliable people who do good without any fuss.
