What it means
Short for family, used for your people, your close mates, or sometimes just someone you're chatting to in a warm way. It hits softer than bro and can carry affection, hype, or just a casual hello. Big in London speech, then pushed wider by grime, rap, and online talk till it went properly global.

Where it comes from
Fam is a clipped form of family. It grew beyond blood relatives into a way of naming your people, especially in late 1990s and 2000s Multicultural London English with strong Afro-Caribbean influence. Grime helped blast it across the UK, then hip hop and internet slang carried it way further.
