Where it comes from
Y2K literally comes from Year 2000. It first blew up around the millennium bug panic, then got reused later as a label for the late-90s to early-2000s visual style. In fashion and online culture, Y2K became the name for that whole shiny, poppy era once it swung back into trend in the early 2020s.
