What it means

Turfed means getting knocked flat, sent flying, or wiped out in a proper sudden heap. People use it for literal falls, rough tackles, or even when illness drains the life out of you and leaves you useless on the sofa. If you got turfed, something put you down hard.

Usage examples

"I stepped off the curb by the Tim Hortons, my boots went sideways, and I got turfed so hard my coffee did a cartwheel."
"That flu absolutely turfed me, I was flat on the sofa for a week."
"Hit that icy patch outside the off-licence and got turfed straight onto my arse."
"One round with that stomach bug and I was absolutely turfed for two days."
"Tried to jump the fence after the pub and got turfed into the bins before I'd even cleared it."

Where it comes from

It comes from turf, meaning grass or ground, with the image of someone being flung down onto it. That sense grew into slang for being knocked over, flattened, or dumped hard on the floor, whether by a hit, a slip, or just getting physically wiped right out.
