Where it comes from
It comes from the literal shopping receipt, the bit of paper that proves the transaction happened. In Black and queer ballroom spaces, then reality TV and online callout culture, bring the receipts grew into a sharp way of saying show the proof. From there, receipts became shorthand for screenshots, texts, and hard evidence.
