What it means
A very Irish way of telling someone to wise up, get a grip, or stop acting the eejit. It can land as friendly advice or a sharp bollocking, depending on the vibe. You’ll hear it loads in have a bit of cop on when someone’s being thick, dramatic, or making a holy show of themselves.

Where it comes from
It’s a real Irish expression. Here cop comes from an older verb meaning to catch or seize, so cop on started out with the sense of catching on or getting hold of the point. In Irish English it settled into a handy way to mean wise up, use your head, or show a bit of sense.
