What it means
A proper put-down for someone you reckon is useless, lazy, or just constantly in the way. Calling someone a waste of space means they take up oxygen, time, or a job slot while adding absolutely nothing back. It’s harsh, usually said when patience has run out, like after the tenth botched task and another excuse.
Usage examples
"He’s meant to be on stock today, but he’s been leaning on the till chatting all shift. Absolute waste of space, mate, get him sacked."
"That referee was a complete waste of space, missed every foul and booked all the wrong players."
"Stop calling yourself a waste of space, you held the whole team together when everything fell apart."
"I asked him to move three boxes and he somehow turned it into a full tea break. Bloody waste of space."
"Don’t stick Gary on the rota if you need help, he’s a total waste of space when it gets busy."
Where it comes from
As blunt as it sounds, a waste of space is someone so useless they do nothing but take up room that could be better used by anyone else. It is the verbal shrug aimed at the freeloader, the slacker, the one who contributes precisely nothing. Harsh, plain and very British.
