What it means
A staycation is a holiday you take without going anywhere, spending your time off at home or close by instead of flying somewhere far. You sleep in your own bed, do day trips, finally try the local spots you always ignore, all the rest of a holiday without the airport stress or the bill. Sometimes a choice, sometimes just what the budget allows.

Where it comes from
Staycation is a blend of stay and vacation. It started showing up in the US in the 1940s, but it really blew up in the late 2000s during the financial crash, when loads of people were cutting travel costs. The word gave staying local a sunnier, less skint-sounding label.
