What it means

Goblin mode is when you fully embrace being lazy, scruffy and self-indulgent with zero shame, unwashed hair, snacks in bed and doom-scrolling at four in the morning. It is the deliberate opposite of having your life together.

Where it comes from

It’s a pretty recent internet phrase that took off online in the late 2010s and really blew up in 2022. It riffs on goblin as this grubby little chaos creature, then adds mode to make it sound like a whole state you switch into. Oxford Languages picked it as Word of the Year for 2022 after a public vote.
