What it means
De-influencing is the flip side of influencing, where creators tell you what not to buy instead of what to grab. They'll list the viral products that are a waste of money and the trends that aren't worth the hype. It started as a backlash against endless hauls and overconsumption, though plenty of it just sneakily pushes a different product.
Usage examples
"Her whole channel is de-influencing now, she tells you which viral gadgets to skip."
"A bit of de-influencing saved me forty quid, that hyped serum is apparently rubbish."
"TikTok's fully in its de-influencing era right now, every other girlie's telling you that viral lip oil is a scam in a shiny tube."
"I needed that bit of de-influencing, honestly. Was two clicks away from buying some overpriced nonsense off an influencer link."
Where it comes from
It took off on TikTok in 2023 as a pushback against haul culture, overconsumption and the whole buy-buy-buy influencer machine. The word is built by sticking de- onto influencing, turning product hype on its head so creators talk people out of buying stuff instead of selling the dream.
