What it means
Dark academia is the moody aesthetic that romanticises old universities, classic books, tweed blazers, candlelit libraries and rainy autumn afternoons. It's all about looking like a brooding literature student in a centuries-old college, surrounded by Latin and leather-bound novels. The vibe is intellectual, nostalgic and a little melancholic.
Usage examples
"Her room's gone full dark academia, stacks of old books, a candle and a tartan blanket."
"Autumn is peak dark academia, tweed coats and pretending I read Dostoevsky for fun."
Where it comes from
It grew on Tumblr and then TikTok in the late 2010s, fed by films and books set in elite old colleges. The dark half nods to the moody, gothic, slightly tragic mood.
