What it means

Bog-standard means plain, basic, nothing fancy attached. It’s the default version, the no-frills one, the thing that does the job without trying to seduce anybody. You’ll hear it for cars, phones, hotel rooms, meals, even people if someone’s being a bit catty about how ordinary they seem.

Usage examples

"Asked Gaz about his new motor. He reckons it’s bog-standard, manual windows, dodgy AUX lead, but it hauls him to Tesco and back, sorted."
"It's a bog-standard hotel, clean enough but nothing you'd write home about."
"I just want a bog-standard phone that calls and texts, none of the fancy extras."
"Nah, don’t get gassed, it’s a bog-standard fry-up, beans, egg, toast, job done."
"The flat looked decent online, then we got there and it was proper bog-standard, beige walls and sadness everywhere."

Where it comes from

It’s British slang built from bog, meaning toilet, plus standard. The idea is the plain, everyday model you’d find as the default in a public loo, no sparkle, no luxury, just the regular setup. It was around by the late 20th century and stuck hard in UK speech for anything dead ordinary.
