What it means
Means dancing like you’ve got zero fear and even less choreography: big arm swings, mad leg kicks, full-body chaos. It’s usually said with affection, like fair play, you’re having it. But it can also be a light roast if someone’s flailing about and clearing a radius on the dancefloor. Classic nights-out phrase.

Where it comes from
The image is of flinging your body into shape after shape on the dancefloor, hurling out poses with more enthusiasm than skill. Throw a shape and you launch a move into the air, and stringing them together is throwing shapes, the joyful flailing that clears a little space around you.
