Doing the absolute least that is technically required and nothing more, usually in relationships or at work. Widely used to call out someone who expects praise for doing what should be the default. The phrase caught fire on social media with the rise of standards discourse. Texting back after three days is not thoughtful, it is bare minimum, and the distinction matters more than it used to.

Where it comes from
It started as plain English for the lowest level that still counts, mostly in jobs, budgets, and policy talk. Then online culture grabbed it in the late 2010s and gave it teeth. On dating apps, TikTok, and Twitter, bare minimum became the go-to drag for people doing the least and begging for applause.
