What it means

Amped means seriously hyped, buzzing, and ready to move. You use it when someone's got their energy cranked way up for a show, a game, a trip, whatever. It can also mean a bit wired or tense, especially after caffeine or when someone's so fired up they're halfway vibrating.

Usage examples

"Dude, I snagged front row at the Hollywood Bowl and I’m amped. Gonna chug a cold brew and scream every chorus like a feral seagull."
"I'm so amped for the gig tonight, I've had the tickets stuck to the fridge for a month."
"The whole team was amped after the last-minute goal, you could hear them from the car park."
"I was already amped for the road trip, then Jess pulled up with snacks and the aux cable, so now I'm fully gone."
"Crowd was amped before the first tune even dropped, people were bouncing like the floor owed them money."

Where it comes from

It comes from amped up, built from amp, short for amplifier. The idea is simple: turn the level up. By the mid 1900s people were already using it beyond audio gear for someone or something full of extra energy, and it stuck as everyday slang for excited, keyed up, or wired.
