What it means
A knee-jerk reaction is that split-second move or opinion that jumps out before your brain's had time to lace its boots. It's usually sparked by anger, panic, or surprise, and once the dust settles it can look a bit daft. People use it to call out hasty replies, rash decisions, and hot takes made on pure reflex.

Where it comes from
It comes from medicine. Doctors check the patellar reflex by tapping just below the kneecap and the leg kicks out automatically. By the late 1800s, English had started using that image for any automatic response, especially one that happens too fast for proper thought to get involved.
