This is how the Magikitos figures are made. Our figures are modelled one by one in cold porcelain, without molds, using techniques refined over years. Each nose, each hand, each hat is different. Not because of a production flaw, but because each one being unique is the whole point. That said, we're not for sale: our figures are made out of love for the craft and here we show ourselves so you can get to know us.
How do you know if something is truly handmade?
There are signs that don't lie. Handmade pieces have subtle variations from one to the next, textures only handwork leaves behind, and a level of detail no assembly line can replicate.
Be suspicious of anything that says 'artisan' but shows up in thousands of identical units. Handmade is limited by nature, because a person's time is limited. And don't be shy about asking: people who work with their hands are usually happy to tell you how they do it.
Where to find handmade gifts?
Closer than you think. A few clues:
- Artisan fairs and markets: there you can talk to the maker, and that conversation is already part of the gift.
- Workshops in your neighborhood or region: potters, carpenters, weavers, bookbinders. Many accept small commissions if you ask with enough time.
- Your own hands: a coloring page from our coloring collection painted with calm, a letter, a jar of jam, a slightly wonky knitted sweater. Imperfect things made with love are worth a ton.
Is it worth paying more for something handmade?
It's worth paying for what's behind it: hours of work, years of craft, materials chosen one by one, and the certainty that this piece exists nowhere else. That's not 'paying more'. It's paying fairly for something extraordinary to the person who made it.
A handmade object doesn't compete with bazaar trinkets. It competes with memories. With the things people keep for years in their favorite corner of home. With the things that get passed down.
What we look for in any handmade piece
The three things we love about handwork make a great checklist for choosing any handmade gift:
- No molds: the piece must be made from scratch, so it has no twins. Unique in the most literal sense.
