Harry Potter Lands on HBO This Christmas (and the Magikitos Have Completely Lost It)

Code red in the cave: this isn’t a drill

Sit down. Seriously, sit down. Grab your cuppa with both hands, take a deep breath and brace yourselves. Because what we’re about to tell you is properly mint.

HBO has confirmed the new Harry Potter series premieres on December 25, 2026. Christmas Day itself. While you’re on the sofa in your dodgy Christmas jumper arguing over who gets the last mince pie, you can hit play and step back into Hogwarts like it’s the very first time. What a present, eh?

Here in the Magikitos cave we’ve been absolutely buzzing for weeks. The Brownies have fashioned wands out of sticks from the Taramundi forest and are charging around the corridors yelling “Expelliarmus” at everything that moves. The cat, the mushrooms from the Shroometer, the letterbox. EVERYTHING. We’ve completely lost the plot.

The cast: here’s where it gets properly exciting

HBO didn’t come to play. They came to deliver. The casting mixes fresh faces with actors who make you do a proper double-take.

The lead trio is made up of three young talents who are going to make us forget... well, not completely forget, we’re sentimental creatures. But they’re going to build something new and special:

  • Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. Already worked alongside Nick Frost in Sky’s comedy “Grow”, so the lad arrives with experience under his belt.
  • Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Straight from London’s West End, where she nailed the role of Matilda in the musical. From Matilda to Hermione is quite the leap, but she’s going to smash it.
  • Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. A complete newcomer with no known prior credits. And that’s ace, because Ron was always the everyday hero of the group, the one who didn’t need a pedigree to shine.

And in the grown-ups’ league, feast your eyes on this teaching staff. Absolute craic:

  • John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. Yes. THE John Lithgow. Trinity in Dexter, the Duke of Edinburgh in The Crown, the alien in 3rd Rock from the Sun... now in robes and a white beard dispensing wisdom. Goosebumps. Actual goosebumps.
  • Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. After breaking us emotionally in “I May Destroy You”, he’s now going to destroy us with a single word: “always”. We are not ready.
  • Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall. With that poise and presence, McGonagall’s going to be more commanding than ever. The Brownies already hold her in reverent awe and they haven’t even seen her in action yet.
  • Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. NICK FROST. The legend from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. He’s going to be the most lovable Hagrid in history and we’d bet a whole cauldron of butterbeer on it.

Seven seasons: one per book, as it should be

The first season is officially titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, honouring the original British title. And HBO’s plan is wildly ambitious: seven seasons, one per book, starting with eight episodes.

This means we’re FINALLY going to see the stories with the detail they deserve. No more cramming 800 pages into two and a half hours. Now there’s time for Peeves (PEEVES!), for the house-elves done properly, for the Herbology lessons that deserved more screen time, and for every little corner of the castle to have its moment. Anyone who read the books and left the cinema saying “they left out the best bits” is going to be absolutely stoked.

Francesca Gardiner (“Succession”, “His Dark Materials”) is the showrunner, and Mark Mylod (also from “Succession”) directs. These aren’t amateurs winging it: this is the real deal.

The Magikitos are already getting the cave ready

Here at the workshop we’ve set up an advance viewing club with rules and everything. Every Brownie has chosen their Hogwarts house (spoiler: most went Hufflepuff, because we’re noble, hardworking creatures close to the forest). The Fairies insist they’re Ravenclaw to the bone, and the Animagikitos just want to know if there’s a magical cat so they can feel represented.

What we know for sure is that this Christmas 2026 is going to be special. Not just because of the handcrafted gifts we’re preparing with all our heart (by the way, if you’re a true Potterhead, have a look at our gift guide for Harry Potter fans), but because we’ll be able to sit down together, light the fire and let ourselves be swept back into the wizarding world.

And if you do it with a lucky Brownie by your side, even better. Hogwarts magic plus Taramundi magic. Unbeatable combo.

See you at Platform 9 and 3/4

Still a few months to go, but the excitement is already here and it’s not going anywhere. We’ll be tracking every bit of news about the series as if our lives depended on it (they do). In the meantime, if you need a bit of magic in your day, you know where to find us. Probably away with the fairies, buzzing about Hogwarts.

Magic never left. It was just waiting for the perfect moment to come back.
